Following Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s shock decision to step back from life as ‘senior’ royals this January, and their move to the US, they lost their royal titles (although they are still known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex).

But it’s nothing new, by choice, law or the result of scandal, a surprising number of kings, queens, princes and princesses have forgone their privileges and given up their titles, including Harry’s great grandfather. Click or scroll through as we look at some notable examples.

1932: Lennart Bernadotte Swedish-born "Prince" Lennart Bernadotte forfeited the right of succession for himself and his descendants and was forbidden to use his title after marrying commoner Karin Nissvandt. The marriage was condemned by his parents and, despite being given a 111-acre island to live on, Lennart and Karin struggled to find happiness in their life outside the royal family.

The King gave up the British throne after a mere 11 months, abdicating to marry American divorcée Wallis Simpson.
