Chapainawabganj and Rajshahi districts have been recognized as Fazli mango producing areas. From now on, the district will be able to use two Fazli Mango Geographical Indication (GI) rights. As a result, farmers will be able to brand this popular mango more at home and abroad.
The announcement was made by the registrar’s office of the patent, design and trademark department of the industry ministry after a hearing on GI rights on Tuesday.
A senior official in the Patent, Design and Trademarks (DPDT) department said Chapainawabganj and Rajshahi districts would now be able to use GI rights as Fazli mango producing areas. ”
It has been decided that from now on, both the districts will be able to use the GI rights of Fazli Mango,” said the official, who did not want to be named.
The verdict came after a DPDT-formed tribunal heard a petition filed by a group of farmers in Chapainawabganj in early October 2021 after the DPDT acquired the rights to Fazli Amer GI in Rajshahi.
Chapainawabganj Krishi Samiti Mango filed a petition claiming Chapainawabganj and opposed the GI rights granted to Rajshahi.
